Who can become a phlebotomist

Who can become a phlebotomist?

Our introduction to phlebotomy course is open to anyone who feels like a career in healthcare is for them. It’s designed so those with no previous medical experience can get the skills they need to become a phlebotomist.

A phlebotomist would not only work in a hospital environment but also in a GP surgery, for cord blood collections, drug rehabilitation programmes and much much more.

You will need to have a caring nature as a you’ll find quite a lot of people are anxious about having their blood taken, they also may be worried about the test results they'll ultimately get. As your confidence grows, you’ll be able to reassure them and complete the venepuncture procedure with ease.

Whilst you don’t need any prior healthcare experience, there are people who attend our courses who have had a break from work and want to refresh their skills, or their qualification is valid abroad but not in the UK. Others already work in the healthcare sector and want to achieve a phlebotomy qualification to help them with future career opportunities within their current workplace. Of course, some people are completely new to the healthcare industry and simply want a new, rewarding career.

Our trainers come highly recommended and understand that everyone on the course comes from a different background and whilst the training is conducted as a group, it is always adapted to suit everyone.

What's it like to work as a phlebotomist?

We know a new course and career can be daunting so we had a chat with one of our trainers, Sarah who was keen to tell us about her phlebotomy career, as well as what you can expect on one of our courses.

What made you want to become a phlebotomist?
My first experience of venepuncture was aged 15 and I remember fainting which gave me a distorted impression that this would always happen. The second time I had it done it was a much better experience and so I wanted to learn to be a good phlebotomist.

What does your role as a phlebotomist entail?
In my role patients pay for blood tests as part of a health assessment so I take blood, test the blood and explain the results of cholesterol and sugar level tests. I then package it and create laboratory forms to send it to the lab. I find it really rewarding to be able to help improve their lifestyle choices to help their well-being.

How did you get into Phlebotomy?
Phlebotomy was a requirement of my role as a Health Adviser. No previous experience was required in phlebotomy, I was trained on the job in the clinic and despite being nervous, loved it from day one.

What inspires you to train people to become phlebotomists?
My inspiration as a phlebotomy trainer is helping people gain the knowledge to go on and excel at venepuncture to ensure more patients have a better experience.

What would you say to anyone considering qualifying as a phlebotomist?
Phlebotomy is a very rewarding career, very varied and dynamic. Don't be put off if you are scared of blood or needles; you can help other patients to have a good experience because you understand their fears.

Why would you recommend a career in phlebotomy?
A career in phlebotomy offers you flexible working, a wide variety of opportunities and opens lots of doors to progress your career.

What participants can expect from the course?
From our course, we will give you great insight into the health and safety, legislation and best practices to ensure you are the best phlebotomist you can be. You don't need any previous experience but also refreshers are welcomed too.

No question is a silly question, we are all here to learn, I learn lots from my participants and ensure you go away feeling enabled as a phlebotomist. I will support you on the course all the way to completion with a smile.
