Who can become a phlebotomist?

Who can become a phlebotomist?

Our introduction to phlebotomy course is open to anyone who feels like a career in healthcare is for them. It’s designed so those with no previous medical experience can get the skills they need to become a phlebotomist.

A phlebotomist would not only work in a hospital environment but also in a GP surgery, for cord blood collections, drug rehabilitation programmes and much much more.

You will need to have a caring nature as a you’ll find quite a lot of people are anxious about having their blood taken, they also may be worried about the test results they'll ultimately get. As your confidence grows, you’ll be able to reassure them and complete the venepuncture procedure with ease.

Whilst you don’t need any prior healthcare experience, there are people who attend our courses who have had a break from work and want to refresh their skills, or their qualification is valid abroad but not in the UK. Others already work in the healthcare sector and want to achieve a phlebotomy qualification to help them with future career opportunities within their current workplace. Of course, some people are completely new to the healthcare industry and simply want a new, rewarding career.

Our trainers come highly recommended and understand that everyone on the course comes from a different background and whilst the training is conducted as a group, it is always adapted to suit everyone.

With further training, experience and qualifications, you could apply to train as a science or healthcare professional such as a  nurse ,  biomedical scientist  or healthcare science practitioner. Most NHS trusts advertise vacancies on the  NHS Jobs website , for trainee positions, as well as for qualified phlebotomists. Vacancies are also advertised in the local press and job centres. Additionally, you can contact the human resources department officer or head biomedical scientist at a hospital where you would like to work.
